Apple has introduced its first MacBook Pro with a touchscreen, pairing the long-awaited input feature with OLED displays and a significantly higher maximum price. The new computers begin at $2,899 and will be available on November 6, with preorders opening October 30.

The launch marks a notable change in Apple’s laptop strategy. MacBooks have traditionally relied on a keyboard and trackpad rather than direct interaction with the display. The new models retain both of those controls while allowing users to navigate applications, scroll through webpages and enlarge images by touching the screen.

Higher starting prices for the new models

Apple is offering the redesigned MacBook Pro in 14-inch and 16-inch versions. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899, while the 16-inch version begins at $3,399. Those prices are based on Apple’s advertised configurations and are not direct comparisons of identical hardware with earlier models.

The new notebooks replace the previous display technology with OLED. Apple says the panels provide improvements in brightness, contrast and color accuracy. The computers are offered with the company’s M5 Pro and M5 Max processors and are advertised with battery life of up to 24 hours, matching the maximum claim for the preceding generation.

Configuration options push the ceiling higher

The headline prices represent only the entry points. TechCrunch reported that Apple’s configuration tool lists a fully equipped 14-inch model at $14,249 and a 16-inch version at $14,549. Both configurations use the M5 Max chip with an 18-core CPU and a 40-core GPU.

Storage and memory upgrades account for much of the difference between the base and highest-priced versions. Moving to a 4TB SSD costs an additional $1,000, while an 8TB option adds $3,000. A 16TB configuration adds $7,000. Increasing memory to 128GB costs another $2,000, and nano-texture glass adds $150.

  • The new MacBook Pro adds touchscreen input while retaining the keyboard and trackpad.
  • OLED displays are available in 14-inch and 16-inch models with M5 Pro and M5 Max processors.
  • The top listed configuration reaches $14,549, compared with $10,149 for the previous 16-inch model.

That maximum is $4,400 above the previous 16-inch MacBook Pro’s top configuration. Apple has also added Dynamic Island, a feature previously associated with the iPhone, to show notifications and other information on the laptop display.

A separate lower-priced MacBook Pro remains available

Apple is continuing to sell a different 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 processor starting at $1,999. That computer does not include the touchscreen or OLED display offered in the higher-priced models, separating the new display technology from the lower-cost configuration.

The touchscreen launch comes nearly a decade after Apple experimented with the Touch Bar, a narrow touch-sensitive strip above the keyboard that the company later discontinued. The new approach places touch input directly on the main display while preserving the conventional laptop controls.
