Anthropic selects JPMorgan for potential U.S. retail IPO distribution

Anthropic has chosen JPMorgan to oversee the U.S. retail portion of its potential IPO, while Citigroup is set to coordinate offerings for individual investors in several international markets, Bloomberg reported.

Anthropic has selected JPMorgan Chase & Co to lead the sale of shares to individual investors in the United States if the artificial-intelligence company proceeds with its initial public offering, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The arrangement would give JPMorgan responsibility for the retail-investor segment of a listing that could become one of the largest in the market.

The allocation under discussion would represent approximately 15% to 20% of Anthropic’s total IPO shares, although the proportion has not been finalized and could change, according to Bloomberg’s report as relayed by Investing.com. Anthropic publicly filed for an IPO on Monday. The filing followed a period in which AI developers have sought substantial amounts of capital to pay for model development and the infrastructure required to operate those systems.

Retail distribution remains under discussion

JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon is expected to take part in the bank’s outreach to individual investors, Bloomberg reported. The report did not establish a final size or timetable for Anthropic’s offering, and the potential retail allocation remains subject to ongoing discussions.

Citigroup will coordinate the international retail offering, according to the report. The planned markets include Australia, Canada, Japan, Britain, Switzerland and some countries in the European Economic Area. The division of responsibilities indicates that Anthropic is considering a broad distribution effort rather than limiting access to institutional investors in the United States.

  • U.S. retail sales: JPMorgan is expected to lead the effort.
  • International retail sales: Citigroup is set to coordinate the offering across the listed markets.
  • Potential allocation: About 15% to 20% of the IPO shares, subject to change.

Major banks are leading the proposed listing

Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are leading Anthropic’s overall IPO, according to Investing.com. The company’s selection of separate banks for retail distribution adds another layer to the offering’s planned structure, while the filing itself indicates that Anthropic has moved beyond informal consideration of a public listing.

Investors have indicated a possible valuation of between $1.4 trillion and $1.5 trillion for Anthropic, Bloomberg previously reported. A valuation of $1.75 trillion has also been discussed as a possibility. Those figures describe potential market expectations rather than a completed IPO valuation, and the reported discussions do not establish the price at which Anthropic would sell shares.

AI companies seek capital for expansion

The proposed listing comes as developers of artificial-intelligence models pursue funding for two expensive parts of their businesses: building increasingly capable models and expanding the computing infrastructure needed to train and run them. Anthropic develops Claude, its AI product, and the IPO would provide a public-market route for raising capital if the company completes the process.

JPMorgan is also leading retail-investor outreach for SpaceX’s reported $86.2 billion IPO, Bloomberg said. That offering attracted more than $100 billion in individual-investor demand, according to the report. The comparison highlights the scale of retail participation that banks are seeking to organize around major technology listings, but it does not determine Anthropic’s eventual demand, valuation or deal terms.
