Chinese construction machinery firm XCMG Co., Ltd, has reportedly improved the control accuracy of the unmanned construction roller from 20cm to 5cm.
The world-leading autonomous road construction company was able to develop a high-precision alignment technology for strapping down the inertial navigation system of the roller, after its research and development team conducted on-site trails for three consecutive months. By collecting data from the trials, the team solved the bottleneck problems the industry had been facing, such as welt compression and complex environment cluster interaction, increasing compression efficiency by 20%.
XCMG’s second-generation unmanned cluster construction equipment has taken part in the 15 high construction projects across 12 provinces in the country, including the Pan-Dalian Expressway and Jingxiong Expressway, reconstruction and expansion of the Xinjiang S21 Desert Expressway, Beijing-Taipei Expressway, and S420 Jinhu Section, and the maintenance project of Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway.
In all, the projects have constructed 500 km of roads, which is the highest in the industry, while its technicians have conducted in-depth research for 170 days annually on average.
National authorities have already recognized the firm’s key indicators, such as obstacle avoidance radar sensitivity, trajectory and control accuracy, and vehicle positioning and acquisition accuracy, for technical appraisal. Moreover, XCMG’s unmanned system at the comprehensive test site claims a 3000-hour trouble-free test time.
Data from the Xinliunan Expressway, Jingxiong Expressway, and Panda Expressway projects have revealed that for every 1km of subgrade construction, autonomous construction rollers only took up 85% of working time and 80% running track in comparison to traditional construction rollers. Not only that, but unmanned construction rollers also reduced 15% fuel consumption, while improving 20% efficiency.
Cui Jisheng, General Manager, XCMG Road Machinery Division, said that the company’s autonomous road construction technology efforts aim at three major aspects, quality, efficiency, and cost.
He added that automated construction technology can also advance standardization and attain high-efficiency, high-quality solutions, similar to the automated production line in the manufacturing industry.
XCMG’s in-house research and development team carry out simulations and experiments for creating high-precision technologies that can be used in real-life situations by incorporating artificial intelligence and 5G.
