Siemens Healthineers launches new production line for CT scanners

The Siemens owned healthcare company aims for further expansion of manufacturing unit in India

German healthcare company, Siemens Healthineers has reportedly announced the expansion of its manufacturing unit in India with the aim of boosting growth of the medical devices industry in the country.

As a part of the expansion plan, the company has launched a new production line catering to computed tomography (CT) scanners at its facility in Bengaluru, India.

The move comes at a time when the Indian Government has made medical devices a priority sector for the flagship ‘Make in India’ programme.

More recently, the Department of Pharmaceuticals deployed a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme with the primary goal of accelerating domestic manufacturing and to attract significant investments in the medical device sector of the country.

It has been reported that the new production plant launched by Siemens Healthineers at the Bengaluru facility has been approved by PLI scheme under its imaging and radiology medical devices segment.

Siemens Healthcare Private Limited is among the approved applicants for the PLI programme, assured with a total investment worth $12.09 million to boost development and manufacturing of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Speaking on the latest development, Vivek Kanade, Managing Director of Siemens Healthcare Private Limited, mentioned that their firm believes in India’s potential for growth in future. The Indian Government’s investor-friendly initiatives will foster exponential growth trajectory to the country’s medical device industry and the overall healthcare sector.

By starting operations of the new CT scanners production line at the existing facility, Siemens Healthineers is underpinning a key milestone to bring its vision to reality, while the company will continue to focus on improving access to high-quality healthcare for all.

So far, the Government of India (GoI) – with its investor-friendly initiatives – has allowed the PLI scheme to provide the necessary backing for catalyzing India’s vision to emerge as a global manufacturing hub for medical devices.
