Siemens Gamesa to build first U.S. wind turbine facility in Virginia


U.S.’ largest renewable energy project is expected to establish in Virginia supported by turbine blades built by Siemens Gamesa, a global leader in the wind energy sector.

According to sources, the renewable energy major will build its new $200 million facility on an 80 acres land near Norfolk at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal which it will lease. The support its operations, the company is expected to create around 310 new jobs for the people in Virginia.

Reportedly, Siemens Gamesa and Virginia’s Dominion Energy have partnered on the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project which will involve a wind farm 27 miles near the state’s coast.

Besides, the $200 million facility will also provide turbine blades to several other offshore projects spread across North America.

Building the renewable industry’s first wind turbine blade facility located offshore in the United States reaffirms the company’s leading role in offshore revolution, said Marc Becker, CEO of offshore division of Siemens Gamesa, during an announcement.

Virginia is expected to pour around $17.1 million worth bonds into infrastructure and site upgradation. An estimated expenditure of $80 million on equipment and building will be done by Siemens Gamesa.

With the recent partnership, the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project will be equipped to power up to 660,000 homes at peak output by 2026 when its fully completed.

As a result of the means opted for energy production, it will be capable of eliminating approximately 5 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.

In compliance to the state law, Dominion is on a mission to report 100% carbon-free energy production by 2045.

Robert Blue, CEO, President and Chairman of Dominion, expressed that introduction of well-paying, clean energy jobs driven by the developments in Virginia on offshore wind supply chain offer sustainable opportunities.

In line with its efforts, Dominion, announced in August that the company plans on building a staging facility and a pre-assembly area for turbines and foundations at Portsmouth.
