Indian vaccine manufacturers to produce single-shot Sputnik Light

Vaccine manufacturers in India that are producing Russia-made Sputnik V vaccine are said to start working on producing the single-shot Sputnik Light jab. The move has been undertaken owing to the complicated process involved in supplying the two-dose covid-19 vaccine.

Dr Reddy’s Lab and RDIF (Russian Development Investment Fund) collaborated last year to co-develop and market the vaccine in India, including technology transfer which is currently undergoing clinical trials for Sputnik Light in India.

Other firms like Dr Reddy’s, Morepan Labs, Gland Pharma, Panacea Biotec Ltd, Hetero Labs, and Serum Institute of India have also partnered with RDIF for manufacturing and selling Sputnik V in the local and global markets.

On whether the firm could fulfil the target of producing 125 million doses of Sputnik V, which was contracted earlier with the RDIF, Israeli said that qualifying Sputnik Light as a vaccine and booster provides opportunities for new placements for the company.

It added that the in the mid-term, it is mostly about the booster, which majorly depends on the protocol followed by the country, specifically for a developing country, so it is still to be understood, but this is an opportunity.

For the record, Sputnik V is a blend of viral vector platforms of Ad 5 and Ad 26. According to experts, manufacturing two doses is as if manufacturing two different vaccines, which require two different production lines.

Rajesh Jain, chief executive officer, Panacea Biotech, said that the main focus is on Sputnik Light. They have completed the registration batches and expect Dr Reddy’s Lab to complete the medical trials and obtain authorization from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI).

Hopefully, the permission will be granted by December. If everything goes well, the commercial production will commence from January, he added.

Erez Israeli, chief executive, Dr Reddy’s, said that the firm is discovering several growth opportunities, like Sputnik Light as an injection or as a booster dose, export opportunities and Sputnik Light for adolescents.
