BASF launches apprenticeship program to curb labor shortage in NA


BASF Corporation, a German chemical company, has recently launched a North American Apprenticeship Program in which it is adding approximately 100 apprentices at 20 manufacturing units across the region.

If sources are to believe, the initiative is launched in order to deal with the shortage of skilled labor in the region. It will offer a unique opportunity to gain on-the-job experience and bag industry-recognized credentials along with earning full-time wage.

Furthermore, the new apprenticeship program hires include an average 44% female employee rate, to achieve the company’s goal of increasing the number of women in the manufacturing sector.

Michael Heinz, the CEO and Chairman of BASF Corporation, says that they have a record of providing apprenticeship opportunities across the globe for more than 100 years. In the U.S., the company is committed to expanding this entry option into the industry along with strengthening its diverse and skilled workforce.

In 2022, BASF launched additional apprenticeship development programs at several sites across the nation including Whitehouse, Ohio; White Stone, South Carolina; and Huntsville, Alabama.

At present, it is partnering with 19 local colleges to make sure comprehensive and integrated training is being carried out along with practical learnings that participants can gain at the company’s operating units.

Emily Canfield, Former BASF Trainee and current worker at the company’s site in Wyandotte, Michigan, said that being hired into the manufacturing sector has been a great help for her and her family. The BASF apprenticeship program worked as a huge milestone in her career, and it was essential for her transition into this field.

The move by BASF is particularly essential as the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) has estimated a labor scarcity of 2.1 million in the manufacturing job sector by the end of 2030. BASF, along with several other companies in the industry are focusing on developing skilled labor to meet the staffing gap.
