The Prefect of the Loire, Catherine Seguin, issued a decree 'deviating from the rule of Sunday rest in retail for the four Sundays of January (10th, 17th, 24th and 31st January)'.

Retail companies in the department 'that do not already benefit from an exception (by municipal decree) from the Sunday rest rule are therefore exceptionally entitled to open'.

Several mayors had asked for it

This permission to open on Sundays was a request from many traders. Some mayors wanted it too, like that of Saint-Etienne, Gaël Perdriau.

The prefecture therefore heard their request to 'encourage the resumption of economic activity and compensate for part of the loss in sales caused by the closure due to the health crisis'.

However, the decree states that 'the conditions under which these Sunday openings can take place must be strictly observed: voluntary work by employees, compliance with the maximum working hours, compliance with the contractual provisions on remuneration for Sunday work'.
